EveTS#13

Date/Time: October 1st/3:00PM
Location: CIES computer lab
Topics discussed: Conducting a Survey
Lesson(s) I learned about my tutee/tutoring: Today Feng & I dedicated time to his homework assignment. He was to conduct a survey by asking 5 native speakers of various ages of the best "hangout" spots in Tallahassee. There were several basic questions that needed answers:
-What is the best place in Tallahassee?
-Where is it located?
-What does one do there?
-How often do you go there?
-Why is this place the best to hang out?
I volunteered to participate in the survey and gave Feng my suggestion: the Fred Astaire Dance Studio. Being unfamiliar with American Culture, Feng did not know what a "ball-room" dancing was neither who Fred Astaire was. I explained both by showing him pictures of couples dancing and the black&white Old Hollywood photo of the great dancer/founder of the dance studio "chain". Feng got a kick from the word "chain" and compared it to the fast-food restaurant chains:) He also was amused by the similarity of the word "ball" and "ballroom". This concept was hard for him to grasp and I encouraged him to look up the word in the dictionary. So, by working on this survey, we touched upon some staples of American Culture.
