Meghan TS #11

Date/Time: October 9, 6:00 am

Location: Skype

Topic/Skill: Speaking

Feedback provided to tutee: During this session we played games again, because this tutee has three tutors and I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate it if we all did the same thing! Today, we specifically played cut it out and three truths and a lie. We've played cut it out before (answering questions without using yes/no/maybe/I), so we got through it very quickly. I can tell he practiced at least a little on his own time, because he took way less time to formulate his responses before answering! Three truths and a lie was just a simple speaking practice activity to serve as a mental break and was (as expected) quite easy for him. Finally, we ended the session by discussing idioms. I first had him introduce and explain the idioms he is already familiar with. Then, I taught him a short list of additional, very common, idioms and asked him to give examples of their usages.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:

I think we were both struggling a bit today, as far as thinking capacity goes. Of course, I still consider this session successful, but it was significantly less intrinsically motivating as I usually try to plan my lessons to be. For me, it's very early in the morning because I need to leave town for the hurricane. For him, it's a national holiday in Korea, so he's been resting his mind all day. It's understandable that both of us were a little tired, and I could see the idioms were a bit of a task for him. Next time, I think I'll try to come up with a more interesting way to study idioms, so he will feel more engaged!
