Meghan TS #10

Date/Time: October 5, 1:00 pm

Location: Starbucks

Topic/Skill: Grammar

Feedback provided to tutee: During this session, I helped her prepare for an upcoming grammar quiz. Specifically, I helped her practice for writing a paragraph which included verbs in the simple future tense, adjectives, and adverbs. She struggled a bit with the difference between adverbs and adjectives, so I looked up a list of each online and emailed her a copy. I also explained to her that many adverbs end in -ly, while adjectives almost never (if ever) end in -ly. I also helped teach her when to use A versus An by writing her a short fill in the blank activity for her to practice with. We reviewed both of these practices together and I helped her correct her mistakes.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:

Both of the grammar points which we discussed during this session were relatively simple, or so I thought. Of course, I've grown up with this grammar, so it's second nature to me! This session taught me that every lesson needs at least a few different ways to explain it, because sometimes one isn't enough. Examples, examples, examples! And most importantly, patience is key. It's really so satisfying when the student finally understands and is able to use the grammar point which is being explained!
