Topic/Skill: Choosing proper words in the context
Location: CIES Student Lounge
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Patrick and I went into an in-depth discussion of the linguistic difference between the verbs "to convert" and "to recruit".  In telling Patrick the story of how I was invited to work for this organization, I used the phrase "they tried to convert me" as in they tried to convince me to go work for them. Patrick suggested the word "recruitment" which makes more sense in this particular contexts. He explained the difference between these two words and pointed out when it is appropriate to use each of them. E.g. to recruit is generally used when talking about a job or a position in sports or military, while "to convert" is used with changing opinions or religions. This was a very valuable piece of information that helped to deepen my understanding of the polysemantic nature of the English language.
