Date/Time: September 21, 2018, 12:30
p.m-1:30 p.m.
Location: CIES Conference Room
Topic Discussed: Verbs and Articles (a, an, the)
In
the previous session my Tutee requested that we work on verbs. I prepared
several activities for her to engage in today. I was pleased to observe that she
quickly applied various verb forms for the infinitive “to be”. The worksheets we used had an
appropriate amount of scaffolding so she could focus on using the verbs in the
correct form, including singular and plural forms and first, second, and third
person.
My
Tutee noted early in the session that she wanted to work on how to use the
articles “a”, “an”, and “the”. I explained simply a few things about these important
parts of speech. Next, I wrote out simple sentences and asked her to choose “a”
or “an” as the answer. After a few examples she became more confident and
answered confidently each subsequent example. I periodically asked her questions about her
choices to determine whether she fully understood why the answer was
“a”
vs. “an”. She gave the correct reason each time. We also examined the parallel
pattern for “the” (e.g., pronunciation: "the" vs. "thee").
At
the end of the session, I indicated I would email some additional practice
materials for her to use. I encouraged her to speak English as often as
possible. She seemed to be pleased with her progress and expressed interest in
meeting again next week.
