Topic Discussed: Fluency in English Speaking
The
lesson today focused on English speaking fluency. Prior to our meeting time, I
searched for some topics that could help my Tutee utilize prior knowledge to
speak continuously about a topic. In an earlier class meeting, the position of
women in her country, as well as other Asian countries, was discussed briefly.
With that knowledge, I looked for some statements attributed to Confucius. I
printed out some “neo-Confucius” statements and brought them to the lesson. I
planned to ask my Tutee for other topics in the even she would prefer to
discuss another topic.
I
listened intently as my Tutee spoke because I wanted to provide my Tutee with a speaking
opportunity and also learn about my Tutee’s culture. She spoke continuously
for most of the hour and didn’t seem to hesitate much (good!). She self-corrected on
many of her speaking errors (word choice, grammar). At times, I would interject
a comment to offer other words she could consider using in a given context. In addition, I welcomed the
opportunity to coach diction and general pronunciation of words (syllable
accent, vowel shape; consonants: “r” and “l”). This was a good cultural learning opportunity for me.
