Discussed: Idiomatic expressions
This
was a good conversation to discuss various idioms and expressions used by
Americans and others. For example, “Rock the boat,” and “Beat the bushes” are
two common expressions used in conversation and writing. In context, the meanings
become clear. Visually, rocking the boat occurs when at least one person in the
boat makes motions or actions that cause the boat to become unsteady or in
danger of capsizing, depending on how much internal commotion is generated. The
discussion ended on a humorous note when wishes for safe travel, and not
rocking the boat were said in jest. The response was, “Don’t worry, I won’t shake the boat.”
