Tatum TS #7

Date/Time: September  26, 2018
Location: CIES Lounge
Topic/Skill: Grammar and editing writing
Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee and I went through worksheets on present perfect/present continuous/etc. and I helped her correct her example sentences. Then we went over some time writing practice she had done and made sure her thesis sentence, hook sentences, and topic sentences were clear. I gave her some feedback on how to structure her future essays and she asked some grammar questions. After we went over her questions, we did some casual speaking practice about the books she is reading in class and some cultural differences.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: My tutee told me two Chinese folktales when we started talking about the Beijing opera. This was really interesting because I had never heard these folktales and I am not super familiar with traditional Chinese culture. Additionally, my tutee told me some of the things she is struggling with in CIES, such as she feels that her intonation and way of speaking is more boring than her classmates. I reassured her that things like her intonation and pace of speech will improve as she speaks more and listens to more English.
