Today I attempted to make the tutoring session more fun and engaging by playing funny English videos for my tutee. Together we worked our way through almost ten short videos, pausing to explain vocabulary and summarize between videos. It was important to me to make the session fun, focusing more on building her listening and speaking confidence than her accuracy. I've noticed she is often quiet if given a choice between using English and not speaking at all. I tried to make it clear to her during this session that she can ask me to define any words and answer any questions without being embarrassed to ask. She is still not as talkative as I would hope, but by the end of the session she was much more willing to offer a detailed summary of a video than she was at the beginning. I learned from my experience with her so far that it's very difficult to teach a student who won't share their insecurities and questions with you, so I will continue to make efforts in the future to make my students wholly comfortable asking question and talking with me.
