Topic/Skill: Listening- Group 3B

This class concerned the ability of students to catch the main idea and lots of vocabulary in English lecture

Teacher Presentation: The instructor wrote new vocabulary that the students might not know and should be keywords in the lecture. The instructor got the students guess the meaning of each word on board, and he gave many opportunities to many students to narrow down the meaning of the word. I think this process made the students memorize the meaning of the word very well. After key words introduction, students listened a little long lecture taking approximately 15 minutes about 'slang'.

Classroom Management: While students had time to share the contents they caught in the lecture, the instructor circulated the room to support students. Students seemed more comfortable to talk because of music the teacher turned on during sharing.

Student Participation: The students seemed very active when the instructor asked about the meaning of new vocabulary at the beginning of the class. And I think that approach prevented students from possible struggling to figure out the meaning during listening.

After sharing in groups about the lecture, the instructor briefly touched about the main topic and gist of the lecture. And he explained the meaning and usage about some words students never exposed before.

I thought the instructor was trying the student-centered class by giving them time to think about word meaning before explanation, and by sharing the contents other classmates caught in the lecture.

Feedback Provided The teacher encouraged students by appropriate praises whenever students answer about teacher's question, and that made the class atmosphere bright and comfortable. Also the definition of each new word was very clear and easy to understand.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I think turning on music during conversation among students is a fresh idea, which makes the intermediate level students feel much more relaxed in the situation they have to talk in English.
Also the effort to make students have more time to think and figure out the meaning of new words before explanation was impressive as a CIES' effective way of teaching.
