Tatum CP #5

Date/Time: September 27, 2:15pm
Location: Argo tea
Topic Discussed: Korean language, cultural differences in my conversation partners classes
During this conversation partner session, I brought the game "Bananagrams" to play with my partner. We talked and played this game at the same time to practice her productive vocabulary. Additionally, one of the most interesting things we talked about was how the cultural differences between Korean and American culture have affected her statistics class. For example, she said that a lot of her statistics problems are based on card games, but that it is really uncommon to play card games in Korea. When she first arrived, she had no idea what terms like "full house" and "straight" were and she was very confused. I thought this was interesting because although she is very proficient in statistics, it is harder for her here because cultural differences impact her understanding of statistics word problems even though she understands what all of the individual words mean.
