Topic
Discussed: Introduction and Plans for Tutoring
Today
I had the pleasure of meeting my second Tutee. I always recognize that working
with students is indeed an honor. Indeed, it is a high privilege to do so.
My
Tutee seems very interested in being helped with the monumental task of
learning a second language. I asked the questions included on the “Conversation
Partner” sheet. It was helpful in using short, simple prompts to facilitate a
conversation. I observed that vocabulary is limited as are verbal skills (productive).
Listening skills are good, but I realized I need to speak more slowly, and, use
high-frequency words (there were points at which I was pretty sure there was
not understanding). I could relate well to this—I had “flashbacks” to my own
second-language learning and remembered those awkward moments when I could not
respond because I really was not sure what was said, or what I was being asked.
Uncomfortable. I’ll try hard to be really sensitive about this!
Early
in the conversation/introduction stage, I explained my role (learning to teach
English and my genuine hope to be of help to her as she worked to learn to
communicate in English).
I
asked her to send me an email (in the next few day—before we meet again on
Friday). The prompt was this: I am planning to visit her country in the near
future. Could she tell me about 3 places I should visit? Can she tell me three
foods I should eat when in her country?
After
our meeting, I follow-up with a “Thank You” email. I wanted her to know I am
looking forward to working with her. And, I wanted to write for her the simple
email I hoped she would write.
I
think it will be a good experience working with someone on the beginning level.
I should learn much about what to plan, how to assist in adding vocabulary, and
improve listening and writing skills. What an opportunity!
