Patrick CP #6

Date/Time: September 18, 2018, 6:37 p.m.
Location: CIES Courtyard
Topic Discussed: Vocabulary Development and Colloquialisms

Our conversation today focused on semantics and use of vocabulary words in various contexts. For example, in what ways is the word “shy” used to convey a message about one’s intent? Is one shy about asking for payment? Is “shy” the word to backhandedly indicate the intent of one who goes about requesting payment unabashedly or unreservedly?

Our discussion moved on to explore old and new colloquialisms once again. Clearly, this is a favorite topic to explore given the changing nature of the English language. The more modern expressions might be viewed from the perspective of those who believe that Orwell's "Newspeak" has become entrenched into American culture. One older expression we examined in detail was, “he put his foot in his mouth.” Such a lively topic to pursue this was (Yoda?). Watching the “light bulbs” illuminate is always a moment to savor--for both the listener and the speaker. I always learn much when trying to explain such expressions. Learning is a continuous journey I hope never ends.
