Topic
Discussed: Revision of Narrative Writing Exercise
This
lesson was a follow-up session to the previous lesson. In the previous lesson,
my Tutee wrote a narrative paper to provide guidance about what to see and
places to eat in her country—to gain a good sense and experience of the many
cultural aspects available there. I had bracketed one particular paragraph for discussion,
but it appeared this section needed time dedicated to it along. We will take up
this discussion and practice at the next meeting. My plan for this lesson will
be to focus on examining various options for listing items in a sentence and a paragraph.
I
had also underlined a part of a sentence where subject and verb agreement
needed attention. I used “sv” as a cue to me; however, I note the legend we
received in class is “AG”.
I
asked my Tutee to re-read her work (silently) and make any changes she thought
should be made. Because she had previously identified areas she thought should
be corrected, she began her work. We discussed several things after she made
several changes in the narrative. Really, I asked several questions to allow
her to process and think through concepts. Because she is an advanced student,
this approach seems to work well—provide only the minimal scaffolding needed. The
learning is completely “in her hands.” I can only hope to provide good
questions to guide the “learning journey.”
During
the next meeting, we will examine the paragraph that has several items in it. I
hope this meeting will prompt productive discussion about various ways to list
the items in a helpful and creative way. Then, we can explore ways to write
them to help the reader follow easily and clearly the flow of the message.
