Date/Time: September 12th, 3:00 pm
Location: CIES Lounge Area
Topic/Skill: Gerunds and Infinitives (kind of)
Feedback provided to tutee: This was a very difficult first session for me, and I fear it wasn't very productive for my tutee. For the most part, we just had a brief conversation and left early.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
This tutoring session taught me that every tutee is very different. In addition to the tutee I met with for this session, I have two other tutees who seemed to really enjoy my friendly conversational style of tutoring. I can't say that this tutee wasn't fun to chat with or didn't want to be there (he was great, it was a problem on my end which left me feeling like the session was a bit of a flop!). However, he came into the first session with in depth questions we wanted to address with me, specifically he wanted help with infinitives and gerunds, and I wasn't able to answer those questions. For the remainder of the session, I felt embarrassed and I think he felt a bit like he was wasting his time. In the future, I need to make sure to ask tutees what they would like to learn before the session, so I can prepare (even if it's just the first session!!!). That's the biggest thing I learned from this. Assuming he will meet with me again, I plan to be more than prepared with practice for him.
