I met with Maria at the Starbucks in Strozier. We talked about Danish culture and American culture, and how they differ. Maria says that Danish people are not as talkative or as friendly as Americans, and they like to ride bicycles a lot. I pointed out to her that people from the north of the United States are not as chatty or friendly as Southerners. This friendliness can be attributed to "Southern Hospitality." The concept of "Southern Hospitality" means people in the southeastern region are warm, hospitable, chatty, and friendly. This can be overwhelming though, as Maria told me about the confusion she felt when a cashier asked her how she was doing. She recounted her experience as a cashier herself, where she never casually asked a customer how they were doing that day. As someone who comes from the south, I think I would think of someone as rude if they did not respond to my attempt to chat, or ignored me when I said "hello." The cultural differences were interesting to learn about, and I hope Maria has an easier time with "Southern Hospitality."
