Tatum CP #1

Date/time: 09/07/18, 2:00pmTopic Discussed: Introductions and cultural differencesOn my first meeting with my conversation partner, we introduced ourselves and spent the majority of the time just getting to know each other. She is a Ph.D. student here from Korea so we talked about her field of study, her career prior to coming to FSU, and what life is like for her here. She did CIES over the summer and now is in the first semester of her Ph.D. program so it has been a big change for her. We talked a lot about Tallahassee and I gave her some recommendations on things to do. Since she is from Seoul she is not used to living in a smaller city with limited movement as she doesn't have a car. We talked for almost 2 hours and she mentioned that she has little opportunity to use English as many of the people in her program are Korean. Through these casual conversation partner sessions, she hopes to improve her conversational English and have more opportunities to speak English casually with other American students. Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: my partner learned more about American football and FSU football games. I encouraged her to go to at least one game since student tickets are free! I learned more about Korean university life. For example, in Korea, it is less common for students to wear shirts and hats with their university's name or logo on them. In the US, however, it is really common to see college students completely covered in their school's logo!
