Yun Jung TS #1

Location: CIES Student Lounge
Topic Discussed: Sentence Structure and Word Usage in Spoken English

I was lucky to have Mr. Malone as my tutor. His first tutoring was almost perfect. I’ve figured it was because of his long career involved in education. He used the Clarification Request and Elicitation in Implicit Corrective Feedback, and Metalinguistic Clues in Explicit Corrective Feedback to my errors or awkward expressions. I asked him to correct me in a direct way at the beginning of tutoring, and he kept trying to correct me using the method we learned in class throughout the tutoring.

I usually don’t feel confident to match verb and object such as 'give a presentation' (not 'make a presentation'), 'have an Influence on'(not 'make an influence on') something like that, especially when speaking. During our meeting, he tried to teach me the exact way of expression.  For example, I said “The kids are not hesitant to make their opinion”, and he wanted me to say it again, asking what I meant to say. And he let me know the right way of saying it ;“express an opinion or state an opinion.” Afterwards, I tried to say that words in my following sentences, and I could feel confident to say that expression. Also I was not sure how to say that characteristic of the kids, and he let me know “assertive”. It was very good to know the real example of meaning since it’s difficult to use a word exactly even though I knew that word in reading. I was very happy to explore new word and expression to utilize it in conversation.

And also he taught me about subtle difference of “to have feelings to something, and to have feelings about something” It was very good lesson because I usually felt confused with the difference when using different preposition such as ‘to’ or ‘for’; “He brought it to me” and “He brought it for me”.

I felt great appreciation for his approach tailored to me. I look forward to next tutoring!
