Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:

I originally intended this session to be an assessment and get-to-know-each-other opportunity. I found out that my tutee is 18 years old, just moved to America from Vietnam to start studying English 1 year ago, and is a very friendly and kind person. She told me she especially wants to improve her listening and reading skills, but I discovered through conversation that she would also like help in speaking and improving her vocabulary. We quickly finished the initial evaluation and, as we still had a half hour of scheduled tutoring to go, I asked if she would like me to help her understand her homework. She showed me that she didn't understand what to do for the compare/contrast essay outline due on Monday. I did my best to explain the concepts of compare/contrast and talk her through choosing a topic (she told me she was asked to choose something within the category movies and books, so I helped her decide on Boss Baby and Home Alone). During my time helping her, I realized how hard it is to guide someone to answer their own questions rather than telling them what the right answer should be (though I did resist in the end, it was very difficult!).
